Associate Professor Mark Tannock and Sports Officer Jaimee Murphy with the 2011 Notre Dame Sports Award winners
Outstanding achievement and participation in sport was celebrated recently when The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus hosted its 2011 Sports Awards evening.
In what has been an immensely successful sporting year across all three campuses, the Awards evening recognised the most outstanding athletes, sports teams and accomplishments over the past 12 months.
The awards were presented to the successful teams and students by Fremantle Campus Sports Officer Jaimee Murphy and Pro Vice Chancellor, Fremantle, Associate Professor Mark Tannock.
Fresh from representing Australia in beach volleyball at the 2011 Summer Universiade (World University Games) in China, Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management student Joshua Court was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year.
The Female Athlete of the Year was won by water polo player and Bachelor of Commerce/Sport and Recreation Management student Cathryn Earl who was part of Australia’s under-18 team during a tour of Hawaii in March.
Biomedical Science student and World Champion Gymnast, Lauren Mitchell, was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Achievement in Sport after winning gold on the vault, the beam, the floor exercise and the all-around at the Australian National Championships in July.
This capped off a remarkable 12 months for Lauren having collecting four gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Her feat equalled the world record for the most number of gold medals won by a female gymnast at a Commonwealth Games event.
Notre Dame’s baseball team was awarded the Best Touring Team of the Year trophy, while the men’s hockey team was recognised for their gold medal performance at the 2011 Australian University Games.
Mrs Murphy congratulated Notre Dame’s athletes on their achievements in 2011.
“Even though we are a small university, the enthusiasm and pride students have in representing Notre Dame in national and international competitions is remarkable,” Mrs Murphy said.
“This was realised at the 2011 Australian University Sports Awards when Notre Dame was recognised for winning the Doug Ellis Trophy at the 2010 Australian University Games for the first time in the University’s history.
“The sporting atmosphere on Campus is growing each year and we hope to encourage more athletes to follow in the footsteps of this year’s award winners in 2012.”
Medicine students at the Sydney Campus also made history at the 2011 New South Wales Medical Students Council Sports Day by winning the Overall Champions trophy for the first time.
