Sports update!!

Friday 26 March was yet another successful day for Notre Dame's sporting teams at the weekly held Tertiary Sports WA Competition. On that particular day, Notre Dame competed in Rugby 7s, Australian Rules Football, and both Men's and Women's Soccer.

Both Rugby 7s and Football teams won GOLD on the day, which is an especially magnificent effort as for the Footy team, as it's only the second year the we've had a Footy team represent the University.

Check out photos of the action below.... although the Men's Soccer team proved too fast to photograph!!

Your Comments.... Our Answers!

Thank you to everyone who left comments and suggestions on our introductory blog! There are a few things that we thought we should address, so you know that we really are listening to you J

·         We’re intending to use our google calendar to keep you updated on upcoming campus and community events. The calendar icon will always be on the main page, so please check it out whenever you visit the blog to check out what’s new!
·         As regards second hand books, we’ll be looking into it, but what would you guys think of a book-exchange day/fair? Maybe one or two days a year where those who are interested in buying and selling second hand books can do so on-campus  on those days!
·         We really liked the idea of a classified section of the blog where different items can be advertised for sale or exchange. However, we need to look more into that first – but we will keep that suggestion on our ideas list for the future!!
·         The Student Association negotiates student discounts and deals around Fremantle each year – we’ve asked them for a list of these businesses so that we can post it on the blog, and as soon as we have it, we’ll post it….
·         All on-campus fitness classes are on the blog here, and we’ll get tryouts up soon :)
·         For Library Opening Times and all things Library, it’s best to use the Notre Dame website… as well as for information on how best to use the Portal :)
·         We liked the idea of students writing about their experiences and we’re going to start that soon – in the meantime we have done a couple of student interviews and we will be posting them next week…
·         As regards volunteering, currently the best place to find opportunities is the VolunteeringWA website, where you can search through endless volunteering opportunities….
·         We really liked the idea of weekly study, stress and nutrition tips and  we’ll start that in the next week or two…so stay tuned!
·         We’d definitely like to be able to keep the blog (and therefore YOU) updated with different exhibitions and events around Freo… please keep your eyes on the google calendar and keep reading the posts!
·         As for Campus Ministry events, we’d definitely like to keep those updated on the blog. We have Conversations on Tap next Monday, as well as the Study Retreat already advertised and there will be more to come (such as an eConference on Tuesday 18 May and another  Conversations on Tap that evening)!
·         Social Justice is a major issue in our society at the moment, and we will endeavor to keep you up-to-date with local issues. There is also a student group on campus known as the Notre Dame Students for Social Justice (NDSSJ). They’re very active on campus trying to raise awareness on various local and global issues, as well as help to facilitate volunteering opportunities. They have an office in the Student Association located just off the Common Room (ND3).
·         One common issue we heard  from many of you  was suggestions of cheap places to eat – so we thought we’d ask you where you’ve found great cheap places to grab a bite between classes…. Where do you like to eat around Freo, and what can you recommend from the menu???

Thanks again for your contributions, and have an wonderful weekend (try to fit in some study somewhere!)

Mentor Program

For many new students, starting university studies can be daunting. From feeling anxious about the more rigorous academic demands to feeling lost in a new environment – you are not alone!
Objectives
To help new students transition into university by having trained student mentors support them in their:
1) Practical needs – getting around campus, learning to access useful information etc
2) Social needs – making friends, having someone to talk to, etc
3) Emotional needs – feeling connected in a new environment, a sense of welcome, etc
Benefits for Mentees
• Have a friendly face in their school to turn to
• Gain quicker access to information
• Reduce stress!
• Gain self-confidence
• Increase ability to work independently earlier
• Relieved of feeling ‘lost’ in a big campus setting
Benefits for Mentors
• Build new relationships within the university community
• Develop interpersonal and leadership skills
• Get formal recognition by the University
• Expand your resume upon graduation

Would you like to be involved with the Mentor Program? Contact Ervina Ng at 9433 0586 or email her at mentoring@nd.edu.au

Orientation

Orientation runs on the week before university officially starts for all new students. For international students, orientation is a two-day event but for the local students, orientation is a short and sweet one-day event called ‘O Day’ (Orientation Day).
‘O Day’ is a day jam packed with informative and fun activities to help all new students get started for university.
Here’s what happened during our recent orientation for semester one 2010:

New students chatting with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond.

Showcase of Notre Dame Student Association and Student Clubs.

Showbags up for grabs at the Student Life Office.

Buying the Notre Dame Student Association Diary to get started for uni!

 Signing up for sport

Commencement Ceremony

In a truly unique University of Notre Dame Australia tradition, the end of orientation culminated in a commencement parade where new students are invited to bring their ‘bells and whistles’ and gather in their respective schools to parade down the streets of Fremantle to celebrate the start of university.

From Left: Pro Vice Chancellor Peter Glasson, Fremantle Mayor Dr Brat Pettitt
and Student Association President Amy Rosario.

Leaving Malloy Courtyard for the Commencement Parade.

New students from the School of Medicine.

Marching down the streets of Fremantle!
