Krav Maga update
Last Tuesday we did inside defenses against straight punches and 360 defenses against outside strikes and and knife attacks.
The knife defenses are always great! I love it when we surprise someone with a knife, they get the "Oh heck!" look on their face then the look of sheer joy as they realize "I can do this stuff!"
On Tuesday 31 August we'll work on more striking techniques and some stress drills -- be prepared to sweat during this class!
I was asked about kicks -- we'll be doing a lot of those, but I'm waiting for some specialist pads/shields so we can do the kicks safely.
Just a reminder also that I have to travel to Sydney on Friday 27 August and Friday 3rd September, so classes will not be held on these days. However, classes will be held as normal on Tuesday 24 August and Tuesday 31 August.
Friday classes will resume Fri 10th September.
As always, please see the Krav Maga link at http://www.freostudentlife.blogspot.com/
Be safe!

ALTC Citations awarded to UNDA staff!
This week, we have the third and final interview relating to the ALTC Citations awarded to UNDA staff members. This week we visited Richard Berlach in the School of Education to find out a little more about the work he has done, and a little more about the man himself… this is what we found out:
1. Can you tell us more about your ALTC citation?
The citation was an affirmation of long-term work on research within the School of Education and the wider University community, this included working with Doctoral students, and training other staff in how to work with Doctoral students. It’s nice to be recognized!
This long-term work granted the opportunity to actively support the work of the Research Office and to also writing a booklet on the responsibilities of being a thesis supervisor.
2. How long were you working on the project?
This is a work that has come to culmination after working on a development of expertise over more than a decade.
3. Can you tell me what you most enjoy about working at Notre Dame?
The people, without a doubt – they’re fantastic. Fremantle is also a brilliant location, and working in a School of Education that is cutting edge, not only within WA but also nationally.
4. Do you have a favourite place around campus to get your morning coffee?
Pasta Addiction, it’s close to the School of Education, and Denis has great coffee!
5. Is there a restaurant/café around Fremantle that you’d recommend? What is your favourite meal or snack from there?
As well as having great coffee, Pasta Addiction is great for lunch, as is Café 55, Villa Roma and Quinlans is always great value!
6. If you got that one Powerball, what do you think would be one of the first things you’d do?
Two things - the first would be to donate a substantial amount to the local church in Mt Pleasant, the second would be to develop a scholarship fund for disadvantaged students in the School of Education.
7. We’ve taken a photo of you in your favourite place on campus – can you tell us what makes it your favourite?
The School of Education courtyard, as the School of Education staff often taken their coffees (from Pasta Addiction) and enjoy them in the beautiful surrounds of the courtyard.

Firstly, Student Life would like to thank all of you who submitted limericks for our competition!! they were wonderful and we enjoyed reading them immensely....
There can only be one winner, and after much deliberation, Dave and Tom decided on the following limerick....
We came on a plane 'cross the sea
For four months down under, we'll be
'neath the moon we will sway
at the Paris soiree
But oh do we hope it comes free

Krav Maga Update
Today is Tuesday August 17th. We had a great session on front chokes and side chokes. Tonight I have to explain to my wife the red marks on my throat (thank you Patrick and Blair!), but I think that everyone did really well.
Please remember the crucial importance of a good, fast pluck! Homework for this week is to practice fast, hard plucks across your chest -- think of Superman ripping off his shirt and remember to make contact close to the thumbs so that you can breathe!
This Friday at 5:30pm class we will do some outside defenses and some "special drills."
Please note that on Friday 27 August and Friday 3rd September I have to travel to Notre Dame's Sydney campus, so classes will not be held on either of those Friday nights.
Classes will held as normal on the Tuesdays.
Be safe and see you in class!

WIN a double pass to the value of $280
Have a BALL competition!!
The STUDENT LIFE OFFICE would really like to give away a double pass to the Student Association Annual Ball on 4 September!
In order to win tickets to THE university event of the year, we’d like YOU to come up with a limerick... and not just any limerick, one that is:
· Suitable (G rated!)
· Stylistic (the rhyme structure being a,a,b,b,a)
· Creative!!
But wait! It’s not that simple...... there are a few requirements: -
1. The theme of the limerick needs to be around the Ball
2. And you MUST include the word ‘Paris’
3. Anonymous entries won’t be considered
4. As the Student Association Ball is an 18+ event, underage students won’t be able to win the tickets – sorry....
5. All entries need to be added as comments to this post
Here’s an example of a limerick, using the word 'Paris':
There was a young lady named Harris
Whom nothing could ever embarrass
'Til the salts that she shook
In the bath that she took
Turned out to be Plaster of Paris
Your efforts will be judged by Dave McLean, Manager of the Student Life Office and Tom Gannon, Manager of Campus Ministry.... Entries close: 5pm on Friday 20 August.
6. BONNE CHANCE!! (good luck) :)

Recycling on Campus
YOU ASKED FOR RECYCLING..... YOU’VE GOT IT!....
We are very excited to announce that, due to popular demand, there is now recycling on the our Campus!!
Please be aware that recycling bins can be found in Malloy Courtyard and Prindiville Hall (aka the Student Common Room)....
There have been some initial problems with the bins in Prindiville Hall – they are being contaminated by people putting the wrong things in the recycling bin, which means that these bins will automatically be collected as general waste!! So PLEASE be extra vigilant with your recycling and the way that you help the environment!!
A big thank you to our Campus Services office for working on having recycling on Campus – your efforts are greatly appreciated!!
If you have any ideas, thoughts or comments about how else we can help the environment on campus – or how to make our existing operation easier to use – please leave a comment below!!

ALTC Citations awarded to UNDA staff!
Once again this week, we have a chat with one of our staff members who have been awarded an ALTC Citation…. This time, we speak to Claire Kaylock from the School of Law….
1. Can you tell us more about your ALTC citation?
In late 2009, I went to an information session on campus run by Dr Heather Clarke, where she discussed the range of ALTC programs including awards and citations. I thought it was all very interesting but was of no possible relevance to me. I then discovered that one of my colleagues (Jean McKay, our Law Librarian) had been a member of a citation-winning team in her previous position at Murdoch University. When Jean went to Europe for a series of conferences funded by her citation prize money I started to feel motivated to apply for one myself. The application process was hard work, and I really felt that my chances of success were very slim. Luckily I was wrong.
2. Can you tell me what you most enjoy about working at Notre Dame?
I love the fact that I can open the window of my office and get fresh air (and live jazz on Wednesday and Thursday mornings). I love working on a campus that’s part of a city, instead of being closed off from the rest of the world. Most of all I love the community of this place – fellow staff, students and the people who live and work here.
3. Do you have a favourite place around campus to get your morning coffee?
I generally go to Blink, because Bea makes such wonderful coffee. However I also go to Moore & Moore for its great atmosphere, friendly staff and fabulous rhubarb and raspberry tart.
4. Is there a restaurant/café around Fremantle that you’d recommend? What is your favourite meal or snack from there?
I think Maya makes great Indian food, and Great Mellie in High Street is a hidden treasure. However my most frequent visits are to the Capri, where the Friday night winter special of Osso Bucco and Polenta is cheap and excellent.
5. If you got that one Powerball, what do you think would be one of the first things you’d do?
I don’t know, there’s really nothing much I want. I’ve been for a wonderful holiday and I don’t need a car because I’m lucky enough to live in Fremantle. I enjoy my work too much to stop. Perhaps a lifetime’s worth of marking assistance?
6. We’ve taken a photo of you in your favourite place on campus – can you tell us what makes it your favourite?
I like the Law Courtyard because it’s a great social hub. It’s a good place to chat with students and get the less formal version of what’s going on.

ALTC Citations awarded to UNDA staff!
As some of you will be aware, three of our University staff members have been awarded Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC). For more details on each of these citations, visit the Notre Dame website. Student Life decided to take to the streets to find out a little more about each of these three staff members...
This week, we spoke with Angeline O’Neill:
1. Can you tell us more about your ALTC citation?
The citation was for ‘motivating and inspiring students through the creation and outstanding teaching of an innovative, sustained program in English Literature’.
2. How long were you working on the project?
I’ve been developing the English Literature program at Notre Dame ever since I started teaching here 15 years ago. I can honestly say that it has been a privilege. It is rare for someone to have the opportunity to shape a cohesive program, and I have cherished this opportunity. It has certainly been challenging, but also very enjoyable!
Along the way I’ve been inspired, both professionally and personally, by some remarkable people. Actually, Dr John Carrigg (Foundation Dean of Arts and Sciences) and Prof. Paul Fournier have taught me a lot about teaching. The rest I’ve learnt from the students! In fact, one of the very best things about teaching is that I’m constantly learning… I believe that the student-lecturer relationship is reciprocal. We learn from each other, and that’s what makes it so stimulating.
3. Can you tell me what you most enjoy about working at Notre Dame?
I enjoy the opportunity to interact with people and ideas. The Notre Dame community, and particularly for me The School of Arts and Sciences, is friendly and supportive. For the most part, there’s a great rapport between staff and students.
4. Do you have a favourite place around campus to get your morning coffee?
At the risk of providing free advertising, Blink always gets my skinny cap just right.
5. Is there a restaurant/café around Fremantle that you’d recommend? What is your favourite meal or snack from there?
Hmm. That’s tough. I don’t think I can choose just one.
6. If you got that one Powerball, what do you think would be one of the first things you’d do?
Well, let me see… I’d buy a cottage in Ottawa, Canada and divide my time between Fremantle and Ottawa: teaching in Fremantle during the week, and relaxing in Ottawa on weekends.
7. We’ve taken a photo of you in your favourite place on campus – can you tell us what makes it your favourite?
I love my office because I love my books with a passion! Every single book is like a fascinating conversation just waiting to happen. The office is a bit messy, crammed with book shelves and loads of papers; it suits me well.
