Krav Maga

Last Tuesday we did defenses against chokes with a push. This Friday Sept 24 we'll cover some pre-holiday techniques.

Classes will be on during next week during Spring break.

Recent weeks have seen some disturbing incidents in the Fremantle area. In one incident two men impersonating police officers tried to get a person into their car. In another incident a man tried to assault a woman on a train. While we should never be alarmed by such incidents, they serve as a potent reminder of the need to good solid self-defence techniques.

The Australian Institute of Interpreters & Translators Inc (AUSiT) is holding its Biennial National Conference at the University of Notre Dame in November, and are looking for interested students to take on the role of conference buddies – tasks would include a wide range of practical tasks to do on the day, from setting up “trade exhibitor” tables, putting up signage, distributing leaflets and maps, helping set up rooms and equipment, liaising with the organising committee, helping the caterers,  taking care of visitors and making sure no-one gets lost in the confusion of Fremantle streets around the venue!

The keynote address will be given by Prof. Paul Frommer, who created the NA’VI language for the movie AVATAR.... if you have a particular interest in language or in conference/events management this could be JUST the opportunity for you....

Krav Maga Update

Last Friday night's class ended with a stress drill. You all did AWESOME (or awesomely) and deserve a pat on the back. The class covered kick defenses against groin kicks and side kicks. We ended with a six-against-one attack in which the defender had to kick, punch, run or otherwise get away from six attackers. I was very proud of how everyone handled the drill -- if you handle yourself in an unfair situation like that, you can handle yourself in the street!

This Tuesday's lunch-time class will cover defenses against chokes with a push.

Stand Up for Poverty!

Volunteers Wanted!

Krav Maga Update

Yesterday (Tuesday) was a great class on front (vertical) kicks and front kick defenses. For "homework" please practice your front kick defense.

This Friday (5:30) class we will do more kick defenses and introduce defenses against chokes with a push -- as always, please remove chains, earring etc before class.

We may have a surprise drill to finish the class.

Please remember to wear a mouthguard. Also, men should have a groin guard. At this level women's groin guards are optional. Why is a groin guard important? This clip from the Simpsons says it all http://www.kravmagamodena.it/?p=72

Multicultural Day 2010

Multicultural Day at Notre Dame was celebrated enthusiastically on the 8th of September this year. The vast array of cultures present within our university led to this year’s theme of the ‘Americas’ which highlights the unique national music, food and languages within North, Central and South America.  The music, dance and song of the Beleza Samba School created an atmosphere of passion and celebration. Bianca Ward, a Notre Dame nursing student as well as Zumba Queen at Danza Loca, entertained the crowd with her mix of Latin rhythms. Student and staff originating from the Americas took the opportunity to proudly showcase their heritage through food. What was especially popular was a Colombian condensed milk dessert prepared by student Melissa Jaimes Ochoa.  The United States were represented by a cowboy and a cowgirl as well as a native American tepee to represent the Indigenous minority and the classic American hamburger. Students and staff also walked away with free Polaroid shots of the day's memories. Of course, no Multicultural Day is ever complete without food. The International Student Association and the Student Life Office pulled out all the stops in this area- nachos, burgers, as well as the popular South American stew “Locro” of corn, spicy chorizo sausage and pork all help to bring warmth on a wintry day. Thanks to everyone who came and made the day a success. We will see you next year!

Krav Maga Update

On Friday night we had a good class focusing on front (vertical) kicks and we did a couple of stress drills.
Congratulations to everyone who survived. You were awesome.
This Tuesday (Sept 14) we'll be revising kicks and doing some kick defenses.

Krav Maga Update

Today (Tuesday, 7th Sept), we did front round kicks and revised front (groin) kicks.
We did some stress work, which everyone did very well (give yourselves a clap for that).

This Friday, Sept 10th, we'll be working on front (vertical) kicks -- and maybe an extra stress drill or two.

MULTICULTURAL DAY

Mature-Aged Student Brekkie

Last Tuesday morning, the Student Life Office organised a brekkie social for a special group of students – the ‘mature-agers’.  In total, twenty six of them came from different schools and backgrounds and had a great time making new friends and re-connecting with others they had known. If you are a mature-aged student and wish to be informed about future events, please contact Ervina Ng at 9433 0586 or email: ervina.ng@nd.edu.au

Krav Maga

On Tuesday 31 Aug we did groin kicks and groin kick-punch combinations. A groin kick is an effective, but underrated weapon. For "homework" please practice the groin kick-punch combinations, focusing on landing the punch as your front foot reaches the ground.

Remember a key principle we discussed in class -- whether kicking or punching, you want to strike "past the target" [i.e. if kicking to the groin, aim for the chest, with the groin 'interrupting' the path of your foot] and bring your fist or foot back quickly. This creates maximum impact and brings you back into your fight stance quickly.

For class on Tuesday 7th, I'm planning to do more kicks.

Just a reminder also that I have to travel to Sydney on Friday 27 August and Friday 3rd September, so classes will not be held on these days. However, classes will be held as normal on Tuesday 24 August and Tuesday 31 August.
Friday classes will resume Fri 10th September.

As always, please see the Krav Maga link at http://www.freostudentlife.blogspot.com/
